IELTS Reading Band 6: what to work on

Last reviewed:

Read beyond lexical resemblance. An option can repeat the passage vocabulary while reversing its relationship, and a useful heading can summarise a paragraph without sharing its most memorable noun. At this stage the teaching priority is connecting paraphrase, paragraph purpose and a sustainable pace. Keep a distinction between reading for the argument and checking the precise wording of an answer.

This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.

What usually needs to be in place

  • Recognise changes in cause, comparison and degree.
  • Summarise a paragraph in a short plain sentence.
  • Eliminate an attractive option with textual evidence.
  • Use a planned checkpoint without rushing every line.

These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.

Common sticking points on the way to band 6

  • A heading names an example rather than the paragraph argument. RDG-HEAD-KEYWORD
  • A synonym is accepted even though the relationship has changed. RDG-TFNG-ASSUME
  • Repeated rereading consumes time without resolving the disputed phrase. RDG-TIME-SPLIT

One practice step you can do today

Choose a paragraph comparing two transport schemes. Give it your own five-word heading before looking at the options. In the matching-headings guide, explain why the closest distractor covers only an example. Use the reading timer to note how long the evidence check takes, then repeat on a fresh paragraph.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.

IELTS test format — Reading

Reading uses marked answers to test questions, with Academic and General Training treated as distinct papers; consult the scoring explanation for how results are reported rather than converting a local drill into a band. A short exercise covers only part of the paper, so a useful review looks at the reasons for answers on new material before drawing any broader conclusion about learning needs; the priorities above are our teaching choices and are not separate Reading band descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method

Separate a vocabulary gap from a reasoning error. The first may need a small phrase review; the second needs a comparison of relationships. Keep one clear correction in the error log so the next attempt has a specific question to answer.

Questions about this practice route

Are synonyms enough to find answers?

No, check who did what, how strongly it is stated and whether the relationship matches the question.

Should I read every word at one speed?

Slow down around disputed evidence and move more quickly through material that only locates the topic.

What belongs in the error log?

Record the misleading choice, the decisive phrase and one reason the two did not match in meaning.
