IELTS Writing Band 9: what to work on

Last reviewed:

Exercise control over the whole response, including the decision to stop revising. Aiming for band 9 involves an exacting ambition across task fulfilment, organisation, vocabulary and grammar. It does not justify claims that every polished paragraph demonstrates that level. Academic Task 1 and General Training Task 1 have different purposes; the discipline is to meet the selected task fully while preserving an effortless line of meaning.

This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.

What usually needs to be in place

  • Check that every task requirement is satisfied.
  • Control emphasis and paragraph proportion.
  • Choose precise language without unnecessary display.
  • Protect time for a purposeful final revision.

These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.

Common sticking points on the way to band 9

  • Revision improves one sentence but damages the paragraph balance. WRT-COH-LINK
  • An elegant conclusion introduces an unsupported new claim. WRT-T2-DEVELOP
  • A strong essay hides neglected preparation for the other task. WRT-T1-OVERVIEW

One practice step you can do today

Use the writing timer to reserve a final editing window. In the coherence guide, audit paragraph purpose first, then inspect the key claims for precision using the lexical-resource guide. Finish with sentence boundaries and recurring grammar risks. Keep an earlier draft so you can explain why each substantial revision improved the response.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.

IELTS test format — Writing

The public descriptors assess task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; the linked document covers Task 1 and Task 2, including separate Academic and General Training Task 1 requirements. Task 2 alone is not a Writing result because both tasks contribute to the full assessment; the priorities on this page are teaching interpretations rather than a reproduction of the descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method

Review choices across complete tasks and unfamiliar prompts. Ask whether a change improves accuracy, relevance or readability; reverse it if it only sounds more elaborate. This editorial routine supports deliberate practice but cannot certify a top-band outcome from a local exercise.

Questions about this practice route

Can revision make a draft worse?

Yes, an isolated improvement can disrupt the surrounding meaning, so reread the paragraph after a substantial change.

What should I check before polishing vocabulary?

Confirm that the answer fulfils the prompt and that the argument or information order is sound before fine wording changes.

Can I ignore Task 1 after a strong essay?

No, preparation and assessment involve both tasks, with Academic and General Training requirements kept distinct.
