Observable problem
A word sounds advanced but changes the meaning or does not fit its neighbouring words. Quote the whole phrase, not just the unusual word. State what you intended to communicate in simple language first. That gives a teacher something concrete to compare with the actual wording instead of praising complexity on its own.
Why it happens
Substituting a thesaurus entry can ignore tone, grammatical pattern and usual combinations. The useful question is whether the phrase expresses the precise action or relationship you need. Prefer a clear familiar phrase while you check an unfamiliar alternative. This routine practises lexical fit; it does not reward rare words or infer a vocabulary score.
Original micro-drill
Original draft: “The council performed a decision to extend the cycle path.” Quote “performed a decision”. Intended meaning: the council chose an action. Revise to “made a decision” or “decided to extend”, then reread the whole sentence. Explain why the replacement preserves the action and grammatical structure, rather than claiming it is simply more sophisticated.
New-task transfer check
New prompt: describe a museum’s plan to improve access. Write a fresh sentence using a different action phrase, then underline the words that must work together. Explain the intended meaning before checking usage with a reliable dictionary or teacher. If the source does not support the phrase, keep the simpler version and mark the alternative for review.
Next action
Keep the first draft, one quoted span and the revision side by side. A claimed strength needs a separate example; a tidy outline alone does not prove another criterion. Try the new prompt before describing transfer, then ask for a narrowly scoped review if the pattern returns.
