Observable problem
A paragraph contains several linking expressions, yet the reader cannot tell why the second claim follows the first. Quote the two sentences at the jump. Describe the missing relationship rather than counting connectors. The weakness code belongs to that observable span; it is not a label for the writer or a complete Writing assessment.
Why it happens
A connector can announce a relationship without explaining it. “Therefore” cannot supply the reason that the reader needs. Work backward from the conclusion and ask what must be true for it to follow. Then add the missing explanation or weaken the conclusion. Changing the connector alone may leave the same gap in place.
Original micro-drill
Original draft: “The library should open later. Therefore, local residents will read more.” Quote “will read more”. Explain the missing step: later hours may help people who finish work late access books, but access does not promise reading. Revise the sentence to make that modest relationship explicit without inventing research or a measured outcome.
New-task transfer check
New prompt: should a community centre lend tools? Draft a reason and a qualified consequence, then quote the sentence connecting them. Check whether the consequence depends on an unstated assumption. Compare this new span with the library revision. Keep the criterion narrow: a clearer reasoning link, not an essay band or proof that the proposal works.
Next action
Keep the first draft, one quoted span and the revision side by side. A claimed strength needs a separate example; a tidy outline alone does not prove another criterion. Try the new prompt before describing transfer, then ask for a narrowly scoped review if the pattern returns.
