IELTS Writing Band 5: what to work on

Last reviewed:

Give the reader a clear overview or position, then make the paragraphs follow it. For Academic Task 1 this means selecting the main patterns rather than listing every figure. General Training Task 1 instead needs a recognisable purpose and appropriate tone throughout the letter. Task 2 calls for a position that actually responds to the question. More linking words cannot repair an unclear central message.

This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.

What usually needs to be in place

  • Select main features before supporting details.
  • State a relevant position for an essay.
  • Link sentences through meaning and reference.
  • Use vocabulary you can explain in context.

These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.

Common sticking points on the way to band 5

  • The overview repeats isolated numbers without a pattern. WRT-T1-OVERVIEW
  • Every sentence begins with a connector that adds no relationship. WRT-COH-LINK
  • An unusual word replaces an accurate familiar expression. WRT-LEX-FIT

One practice step you can do today

Open the Task 1 overview guide. For an Academic chart, write two sentences identifying the largest contrast and the broad change without listing every number. For a General Training letter, write its purpose and match each requested point to a paragraph. Use the lexical-resource guide to check whether key words fit their context.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.

IELTS test format — Writing

The public descriptors assess task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; the linked document covers Task 1 and Task 2, including separate Academic and General Training Task 1 requirements. Task 2 alone is not a Writing result because both tasks contribute to the full assessment; the priorities on this page are teaching interpretations rather than a reproduction of the descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method

Teach selection before decoration. Compare a paragraph with and without unnecessary connectors and ask which version is easier to follow. Record one vocabulary correction with its surrounding phrase, then use it in a different sentence rather than memorising a detached synonym.

Questions about this practice route

Does every paragraph need several linking words?

Make the relationship clear first; reference words and a logical order often connect ideas without repeated signposting.

Can a letter use an Academic overview?

A letter needs its purpose, recipient and requested points; the chart-summary routine does not replace those requirements.

How do I expand vocabulary safely?

Learn a useful phrase with its meaning and grammatical pattern, then check whether it suits the new task.
