Observable problem

You select a heading because its keyword appears several times, but the paragraph uses that topic to make a different point. Record a one-sentence account of what the paragraph does: introduce a problem, explain a change, compare options or qualify an earlier claim. A topic word alone cannot show that relationship.

Why it happens

Repeated nouns make a heading feel familiar. Purpose requires connecting the opening, development and final turn. Temporarily cover the heading choices and summarise the paragraph before comparing them. This removes one source of keyword attraction. Keep a rejected heading with your explanation so a teacher can see the distinction you actually made.

Original micro-drill

Original paragraph: “The town planted trees along the square. At first, the roots lifted paving stones. Engineers changed the planting pits, and the newer trees no longer damaged the surface.” Choose between “The beauty of town trees” and “Changing a design to solve a problem”. Underline the difficulty and the response before naming the better heading.

New-task transfer check

New paragraph: “A workshop offered evening sessions. Attendance stayed low until organisers moved the start time to follow the last factory shift. The later sessions filled.” Write your own purpose heading before seeing options. Compare the reason for change, not the presence of “sessions”. Explain which line would make a simple description-of-events heading too broad.

Next action

Keep a claim, its paragraph reference and your reason together. If there is no settling line, say what is missing instead of importing background knowledge. Use a new passage before describing transfer. Keep Academic and General Training evidence separately scoped; this exercise supplies no band. Bring both attempts for review if the same unsupported inference returns, and choose one reading action to try next.
