Figures are listed without a main pattern; a letter describes events without stating its purpose.
Why it happens
Detail collection replaces selection. Choose the main contrast for a visual; identify purpose and reader for a letter.
Original micro-drill
Use the separate worksheets below: draft, quote one span, revise. Do not invent causes absent from the table.
New-task transfer and next action
Cover the first draft before the new prompt. Keep both quoted spans for teacher review. Repeating the old answer is rehearsal. No score is produced.

- Draft: describe the overall pattern, not every value.
- Quote: test “all modes increased” against the car row.
- Revise: “Bus and bicycle journeys rose while car journeys fell.” Explain the contrast.
- New prompt: fictional room bookings change from 18 to 12 mornings, 10 to 22 afternoons, and remain 8 evenings. Draft a fresh overview; quote its main claim.
General Training letter stub
- Draft: write to a community centre about an unavailable workshop room. Explain the issue and request action.
- Quote: underline your purpose sentence. “It was inconvenient” leaves the request unclear.
- Revise: state the requested action in a suitable tone.
- New prompt: ask a neighbour to care for a fictional balcony garden. State dates, care needs and contact arrangements. Quote the new purpose sentence; compare tone.
Work in private notes: no submission, storage or score. Visual analysis and letters are separate tasks; neither worksheet is a complete Writing result.
