IELTS Speaking Band 9: what to work on

Last reviewed:

Sustain a coherent conversation while adapting to what is asked next. Aiming for band 9 is an ambition across the full speaking criteria, not a reason to seek a flawless script. Natural delivery involves the interaction of ideas, language and sound over time. The useful teaching focus is maintaining precision and responsiveness across familiar and unfamiliar topics, including unexpected follow-up questions.

This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.

What usually needs to be in place

  • Respond directly to a changed question.
  • Maintain precise meaning across a long turn.
  • Adjust emphasis to the conversational purpose.
  • Keep a coherent thread when challenged.

These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.

Common sticking points on the way to band 9

  • A polished prepared answer ignores a new angle. SPK-P3-EXTEND

  • Attention to sounding impressive reduces responsiveness. SPK-P3-EXTEND

One practice step you can do today

Use the Part 2 timer for an unrehearsed account, then move to the Part 3 guide for a related but more abstract question. Ask a practice partner to change one assumption and answer again. Reflect on whether you responded to the change or returned to your prepared position, without turning the session into a self-awarded score.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.

IELTS test format — Speaking

The public descriptors consider fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation across the speaking performance; the linked document includes the band discussed here. Typed practice never judges pronunciation or fluency, and pronunciation work requires audio and consent rather than inference from written answers.

Jurassic teaching method

Review adaptability across several real spoken exchanges. A teacher can examine the relationship between precise wording, coherent development and understandable sound with consent. Keep the feedback specific enough to practise; admiration for a polished answer is not evidence of a complete top-band performance.

Questions about this practice route

Is a flawless script the best preparation?

A script cannot anticipate the interaction; practise explaining unfamiliar ideas and adapting to follow-up questions instead.

How do I test responsiveness?

Change an assumption or ask for a limitation, then check whether the reply addresses that new demand directly.

Can typed practice establish this level?

Typed work can explore ideas and vocabulary, but it cannot establish how a complete spoken exchange is delivered.
