Maintain a clear position while handling detail precisely. An essay can sound confident in its introduction but drift when a body paragraph introduces an unsupported exception. A route towards band 7 asks for consistency of argument, accurate word combinations and flexible sentence forms. Academic Task 1 also needs well-chosen features and comparisons; General Training Task 1 needs a consistent purpose and an appropriate relationship with the recipient.
This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.
What usually needs to be in place
- Keep the position visible through the conclusion.
- Choose evidence that advances the argument.
- Check collocation and degree of certainty.
- Vary complex forms without obscuring meaning.
These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.
Common sticking points on the way to band 7
- A concession quietly contradicts the stated position. WRT-COH-LINK
- A sophisticated noun is paired with the wrong verb. WRT-LEX-FIT
- A long conditional changes the claim unintentionally. WRT-GRA-PATTERN
One practice step you can do today
Use the coherence guide to build a reverse outline of your essay: write one sentence for the purpose of each paragraph. Compare that outline with the introduction and conclusion. Then open the lexical-resource guide and inspect three important verb-noun combinations. Revise one imprecise claim before checking punctuation and complex forms.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.
IELTS test format — Writing
The public descriptors assess task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; the linked document covers Task 1 and Task 2, including separate Academic and General Training Task 1 requirements. Task 2 alone is not a Writing result because both tasks contribute to the full assessment; the priorities on this page are teaching interpretations rather than a reproduction of the descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method
Ask a reader to identify the position from the body alone. Discuss the precise point at which an example supports or limits it. Feedback should make the writer more deliberate about choices, rather than demand a fixed number of impressive words in every paragraph.
Questions about this practice route
Can I acknowledge the other view?
A concession can strengthen the argument when its limits and its relationship to your position are made explicit.
How do I test vocabulary precision?
Check the intended meaning, the usual word partnership and whether the strength of the wording matches the evidence.
Must every sentence be complex?
Use a suitable range with control; a direct sentence may express the central claim more clearly than a longer form.
