IELTS Writing Band 8: what to work on

Last reviewed:

Develop nuance without making the reader work to reconstruct the argument. At this point the teaching focus shifts towards well-judged qualifications, unobtrusive cohesion and careful control of rare errors. Academic summaries require skilful selection rather than decorative commentary. General Training letters need a tone that fits both purpose and reader. An essay benefits from depth when each limitation is integrated into a coherent position.

This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.

What usually needs to be in place

  • Distinguish a genuine qualification from indecision.
  • Connect paragraphs through their developing ideas.
  • Use less common language only where it fits.
  • Review occasional errors for an underlying pattern.

These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.

Common sticking points on the way to band 8

  • A qualification is added without explaining its effect on the conclusion. WRT-T2-DEVELOP
  • Signposting describes a structure that the argument does not follow. WRT-COH-LINK
  • A rare expression sounds polished but distorts the intended meaning. WRT-LEX-FIT

One practice step you can do today

Open the lexical-resource guide and choose one paragraph containing an important qualification. Rewrite the central claim in plain language, then compare it with the original wording. Use the grammar guide to inspect the sentence carrying the exception. Keep the more precise version and check whether the next paragraph follows naturally from it.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.

IELTS test format — Writing

The public descriptors assess task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; the linked document covers Task 1 and Task 2, including separate Academic and General Training Task 1 requirements. Task 2 alone is not a Writing result because both tasks contribute to the full assessment; the priorities on this page are teaching interpretations rather than a reproduction of the descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method

Teach editorial judgement through alternatives that preserve meaning. Ask what each revision gains and what it risks losing. A useful review may remove a conspicuous connector or replace an elegant but inaccurate phrase, rather than always adding complexity to the draft.

Questions about this practice route

Does nuance mean giving every side equal space?

Give space according to the question and your reasoning; a qualification needs a clear role in the argument.

Should I remove all linking words?

Keep signals that help the reader and remove those that merely announce an obvious relationship without adding clarity.

How do I review rare mistakes?

Inspect the conditions that produced the slip and test a corrected form in a new sentence before closing the log.
