Develop an idea far enough for the reader to understand why it matters. A route towards band 6 often benefits from clearer paragraph logic, relevant support and complex sentences used with control. Academic data descriptions still need a relevant overview and selected evidence. General Training letters need all requested points addressed with suitable tone. Task 2 development should not become a stream of examples without explanation.
This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.
What usually needs to be in place
- Connect a claim to a reason and illustration.
- Give each paragraph one main job.
- Use subordinate clauses for a clear relationship.
- Check whether supporting detail stays relevant.
These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.
Common sticking points on the way to band 6
- An example appears without explaining its connection to the claim. WRT-T2-DEVELOP
- Two paragraphs repeat the same reason in different words. WRT-COH-LINK
- A complex sentence loses its main clause. WRT-GRA-PATTERN
One practice step you can do today
Open the Task 2 structure guide and draft one body paragraph. Label its claim, explanation and example. Use the coherence guide to test whether changing the sentence order damages the logic. During a timed revision, simplify one overloaded sentence and add the missing explanation before writing another paragraph.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.
IELTS test format — Writing
The public descriptors assess task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; the linked document covers Task 1 and Task 2, including separate Academic and General Training Task 1 requirements. Task 2 alone is not a Writing result because both tasks contribute to the full assessment; the priorities on this page are teaching interpretations rather than a reproduction of the descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method
Treat sentence complexity as a tool for expressing relationships. Feedback should identify the point where a reader needs more explanation, not merely count advanced structures. Revisit the same reasoning move on a new topic to check whether it transfers beyond a rehearsed paragraph.
Questions about this practice route
How much development does one idea need?
Explain the mechanism or consequence that connects your example to your claim, rather than adding unrelated illustrations.
Should I avoid complex sentences?
Use them when they clarify cause, condition or contrast, and check that the main proposition remains complete.
Does a strong Task 2 equal a Writing score?
Both tasks contribute to Writing assessment, so a single essay or paragraph cannot establish the whole result.
