IELTS Writing Band 4: what to work on

Last reviewed:

Make the response understandable before adding ambitious language. A practical route towards band 4 starts with recognising what the task asks, grouping related ideas and writing simple sentences that carry a complete meaning. Academic Task 1 needs work with visual information; General Training Task 1 needs a letter suited to its purpose and reader. Keep those tasks separate from an opinion essay.

This page describes common priorities when aiming for this band. It is not an assessment of your level; only an IELTS test or a teacher's assessment can confirm your band.

What usually needs to be in place

  • Identify every instruction in the prompt.
  • Group related sentences into basic paragraphs.
  • Use a clear subject and verb.
  • Check whether an example supports the question.

These priorities are teaching hypotheses for planning practice, rather than a checklist that awards a result; use unfamiliar material and feedback from a qualified teacher to decide which part of the route deserves more attention.

Common sticking points on the way to band 4

One practice step you can do today

Open the grammar guide and write a short paragraph about a familiar public facility. Underline each subject and verb, then check the sentence endings. Use the writing timer for a brief revision period. Finally, compare each sentence with the prompt and remove one that does not help answer it.

Keep a short record of the prompt, the decision you made and the evidence for the correction, including whether the difficulty arose while understanding the task, choosing a response or checking the final answer, and take that distinction into account when selecting fresh material, so that the next session tests a specific learning question rather than simply repeating material you already remember.

IELTS test format — Writing

The public descriptors assess task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy; the linked document covers Task 1 and Task 2, including separate Academic and General Training Task 1 requirements. Task 2 alone is not a Writing result because both tasks contribute to the full assessment; the priorities on this page are teaching interpretations rather than a reproduction of the descriptors.

Jurassic teaching method

Start with one visible repair the learner can explain. A clean short sentence is more useful than an impressive phrase used without meaning. Return to a new prompt after feedback so the review tests understanding rather than the ability to copy a corrected paragraph.

Questions about this practice route

Should I use a memorised essay opening?

Use an opening that answers this prompt; a stored sentence can distract from the actual question and reader.

Is a longer sentence automatically better?

Length adds value only when the relationships remain clear and the grammar supports the intended meaning.

Can one paragraph show my Writing result?

A paragraph offers evidence about a small part of writing and cannot replace assessment of both tasks.
