Observable problem

A paragraph makes a clear statement but does not show how that statement answers the actual prompt. Quote the claim and the relevant instruction. A fluent-looking paragraph may still develop a different issue. Keep the observation tied to the task response you can see, rather than assigning a whole Writing result from one paragraph.

Why it happens

A familiar topic can trigger a memorised argument before the precise question is understood. Turn the instruction into a short planning question first. Then ask what each paragraph contributes to answering it. The Claim, Evidence, Interpretation and Warrant scaffold can expose a missing link, but it cannot replace careful reading of the task or establish assessment calibration.

Original micro-drill

Original prompt: “Should local libraries lend household tools?” Draft one qualified claim and an imagined example. Explain how borrowing a tool could serve a community purpose, then state the condition your argument depends on. Label the example hypothetical. Quote the sentence that connects the example to the recommendation; revise that link if the reader must guess.

New-task transfer check

New prompt: “Should community centres offer repair workshops?” Build a fresh paragraph with a different example and quote its link to the question. Compare the two claims and warrants, not their length. Task 2-only practice is not a complete Writing result; this site supplies no numeric judgement, submission form or claim that the hypothetical proposal has proven benefits.

Next action

Keep the first draft, one quoted span and the revision side by side. A claimed strength needs a separate example; a tidy outline alone does not prove another criterion. Try the new prompt before describing transfer, then ask for a narrowly scoped review if the pattern returns. Do not average this observation with another skill or treat it as a complete Writing result. Choose one repair for your next draft.
